If you’ve managed to somehow miss the enchanting Dusk Dances festival in Toronto’s gorgeous Withrow Park, promise yourself you’ll attend this year. There is nothing more soul-enriching than stretching out on a blanket and enjoying original dance performances in the twilight on a beautiful summer’s eve.
Montreal dancer Sylvie Bouchard organized the first Dusk Dances in 1993 for the Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists in an attempt to bring dance performers closer to their audiences. Twenty-one years later, the festival takes place in Toronto every summer as well as Peterborough, Hamilton, Pickering, and Vancouver.
While the performances begin at 7:30pm, plan to come early—why not bring a picnic dinner?–and enjoy a live performance by the all-Cuban quartet Guaracha Y Son at 6:45pm. You can also take a free Salsa class with the talented Miko Sobreira.
This year there will be performances by the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company, the Danny Grossman Dance Company, Lua Shayenne and Company, and festival director Sylvie Bouchard and Marie-Josee Chartier will perform “Photuris Versicolor,” which is making its premiere at Dusk Dances.
DNA has been a proud sponsor of this event for many years. We hope to see you there!
The festival runs in Withrow Park from August 3-9. Suggested donation is $10. For more information, visit Dusk Dances’ beautiful new website (designed by DNA, of course!)
