The work of graphic designers is everywhere you look so it’s fitting they have a day in the calendar to celebrate their artistic talents. April 27 was chosen because the International Council of Graphic Design Associations was founded on this day in 1963.
How relevant is graphic design? Not only is it used in every industry across all media, there’s no easier way to identify a time or place in history than to refer to some of society’s most well-known logos, the hallmarks of the graphic design artform. Looking at how those logos evolved over the decades you can really see trends coming and going. This year, some of the hottest trends are the use of semi-flat design—a combination of the minimalist approach of flat design with a bit of dimension added in—to the integration of big, beautiful imagery. One of our favourite trends is data visualization – it’s a great way to communicate and simplify complex concepts visually. We’re so bombarded with content these days, an infographic paints a picture that is easy to understand and quickly tells the story.
Our other favourite trend is the resurgence of hand-drawn illustrations, a lost art that’s making a comeback.
