Rare is the person who associates funeral home advertising with a certain joie de vivre, but a series of digital television ads by Cardinal Funeral Homes would prove them right.
To mark the 90th anniversary of serving the community through its west-end locations, Cardinal launched “Celebrating Life Since 1925,” a DNA-created campaign that included three lightly branded TV spots and a historical three-minute video.
The first television ad featured Toronto’s Portuguese community from its arrival in the early 1950s to settlement and success. DNA researched far and wide to get images that authentically chronicled the community’s culture in our city.
The same care was applied to the next 30-second TV ad, which focused on the vibrant and colourful Ukrainian community from the roaring twenties until present day.
Bundled with traditional music and the production flair of Fourgrounds Media Inc., the ads were a huge hit with Cardinal’s audiences. Some viewers even contacted Cardinal to say, “that was me!” or a long-lost relative they recognized in the video.
“Celebrating Life” was close to the heart for the Cardinal family, who are part of the Ukrainian community themselves and have been running their funeral homes for four generations. It was a way to shed the sombre tones of traditional funeral home ads, showcase their history, and pay respect to the heritage of the families they serve.
