April 22nd 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of Earth Day in Canada—the 45th anniversary of the global event—and it’s more popular than ever. This year’s theme, “It’s our turn to lead,” encourages us all to take steps in our homes, communities, and workplaces to make real change in the way we live.
In my community, we typically clean up the beach but my personal goal is to declutter my house by April 22nd and donate to organizations like the Furniture Bank, which helps people transition out of homelessness. I have appliances and accessories that are still in boxes in case I ever want to make pasta from scratch. Isn’t that ridiculous?? I may have a friend over to make sure I’m rigorous with this endeavour.
According to Earth Day Canada’s site, I’m not alone in having a house full of stuff I don’t need:
• In a lifetime, North Americans throw away 600 times their adult weight in garbage
• The average Canadian produces nearly 1,000 kilograms of waste per year
• More than 140,000 tonnes of computer equipment, phones, televisions, stereos, and small home appliances accumulate in Canadian landfill cites each year
